Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s unbroken record: The Indian Premier League (IPL) is the most watched cricket league in the world. Now its 18th season is going to start from 22 March 2025 and fans are eagerly waiting for it. The first match will be played between Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) .
So far 17 seasons of IPL have been played and many players have made new records, but there is one record which seems almost impossible to break. This record is in the name of Indian fast bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar , which remains unbroken till now and is unlikely to be broken even in IPL 2025.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s brilliant performance in IPL 2016
In IPL, the bowler who takes the most wickets in each season is awarded the “Purple Cap”. Till now, deadly bowlers like Dwayne Bravo, Lasith Malinga, Mohammed Shami have won this title.
In 2016, Bhuvneshwar Kumar created a stir in the IPL with his bowling.
- Playing for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), he took 23 wickets in 17 matches.
- Due to this brilliant performance, he was awarded the Purple Cap.
- In the final match against RCB, Bhuvneshwar Kumar bowled the last over and played an important role in helping the team win the IPL trophy.
Sunrisers Hyderabad won the first IPL title in 2016 and Bhuvneshwar Kumar emerged as the hero of this title win.
The only player to win the Purple Cap twice in a row
Bhuvneshwar Kumar performed brilliantly not only in 2016 but also in 2017 .
- This time he took 26 wickets in 14 matches and again won the Purple Cap.
- In this way, Bhuvneshwar Kumar became the only player in IPL history to win the Purple Cap twice in a row.
Till date no other bowler has been able to achieve this feat.
- Legendary bowlers like Dwayne Bravo, Mohammed Shami, Lasith Malinga have certainly won the Purple Cap, but no one has been able to win it twice in a row.
- This record of Bhuvi still remains intact in the 17 year history of IPL.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s record will not be broken even in IPL 2025
In IPL 2024, Harshal Patel of Punjab Kings performed brilliantly, taking 24 wickets in 14 matches and winning the Purple Cap.
Now if Harshal Patel wins the Purple Cap by taking the most wickets in IPL 2025 , he will equal Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s record.
But Bhuvi’s record will be broken only when a bowler wins the Purple Cap three times in a row.
- Hence this record will remain in IPL 2025 as well.
- Till now no bowler has won the Purple Cap twice in a row, so winning it three times seems even more difficult.
Which bowlers have won the Purple Cap so far?

Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s record of winning the Purple Cap twice in a row is a unique achievement in IPL history.
- There is every possibility that this record will remain intact in 2025 also.
- If Harshal Patel wins the Purple Cap this time, he will only equal but will not be able to break the record.
- This record will only be broken when a bowler wins the Purple Cap three times in a row, which is extremely difficult.
Therefore, this record of Bhuvneshwar Kumar is going to remain intact in IPL 2025 as well and it will be a big challenge for any bowler to break it in the coming years.
